Leatherleaf Mahonia
Mahonia japonica 'Bealei'

An attractive, upright shrub with distinctive evergreen foliage and terminal clusters of showy, fragrant yellow flowers followed by highly ornamental, powder-blue to black, grape-like fruit clusters. The spiny leaves make a fine barrier plant or specimen. Plant groupings to increase flower and fruit production. Evergreen.

Average Size at Maturity Moderate growing; reaches 6 to 10 ft. tall, 4 to 5 ft. wide.
Bloom Time Early Spring
Design Ideas This Mahonia is less suited to Western native landscapes because of its unique, exotic character. Its fall color and tall growth have made it a favorite for Asian-inspired garden themes. A fine single specimen near rocks and waterfalls. Gang them under the high canopies of conifer or broadleaf shade trees. Or, use as foundation planting on those difficult northern exposures. A good plant for shaded courtyards and around recessed entries. Can be clipped to fit gracefully into the most difficult spaces. Also makes a reliable dense hedge with seasonal offerings of flowers, berries and fall color.
